NORTH DEVON AND TORRIDGE YOUNGSTERS GET SPORTING CHANCE
North Devon and Torridge youngsters are being given the opportunity to take part in an Olympic style sports event featuring teams from across the region this summer.
Formerly known as the Devon Youth Games, the newly-expanded South West Youth Games has extended an invitation across the Tamar to their Cornish cousins to take part in the region’s biggest annual multi-sport youth event. Around 2,000 youngsters are expected to take part in the 2017 South West Youth Games finals at Okehampton on Sunday 9 July with up to ten times as many taking part in local trials and training events in the lead up.
Nine Devon district teams, including a joint North Devon and Torridge team, will line up alongside a unified Cornwall team to compete in over 20 sports including able-bodied and disability disciplines for male and female competitors ranging from school year 3 to year 14.
South West Youth Games Chairman John Coates said: “The rise of childhood obesity is a growing concern across the UK, we are no different in the South West.
“But since launching in 2000, the Devon Youth Games has been a beacon of hope against the fight against inactivity. It has been the catalyst for thousands of young people to reap the benefits of physical activity and exercise through competitive sport.
“It is also the type of environment which not only incentivises young people to join clubs and take part in regular sporting activity, but inspires them to continue for the long-term. It is also a place where life-long friendships are made between team-mates and fellow competitors who share in the enjoyment of sport.
“This year is a landmark year and we are thrilled to be extending our hands of friendship to North Devon and Torridge and we hope they too will grab the baton and reap the rewards of young people being fully engaged with sport and physical activity.
