An innovative new street league will be launched across Devon and Cornwall aimed at the growing urban sport scene. street series South West will feature skateboarding, scootering and freestyle BMX events at facilities across the region next year. The series will begin at Mount Hawke Skatepark near Truro on 4 January and include events in Saltash’s Junkyard Skatepark, Prime Skatepark in Plymouth and the Lodge Indoor Skatepark in Newton Abbot for young people aged 5 to 21. The 2019 street series sw concluded on Sunday with another action-packed day at Mount Hawke. Over 50 riders got gnarly in the bowl, street and boxes in BMX, scootering and skateboarding. On the bikes, Dead Sailor and Roots were well represented with Fraizer Devine (5-15yr) and Aaron Wilson securing an individual double success for Dead Sailor. In the team standings, Roots (5-15yr) and Cornwall Boys (16-21yr) topped the box. Also on two wheels, there was a really close competition in the 5-15yr scootering bracket with Maxwell Jackson edging Jonah Jackson and Remy Korman in the top three.  Cornwall Boys were the leading team. The street series sw rolled into Newton Abbot on Sunday with 42 participants showing some incredible skills in BMX, scootering and skateboarding. Competitors streamed in from Truro, Braunton, Southampton and Plymouth for the second round of the inaugural series which launched at Mount Hawke on 4 January.  At the Lodge Indoor Skatepark, there were some standout displays from Dead Sailor who took individual (Fraizer Devine) and team success in the BMX in the 5-15 class whilst Brandon Docking tightened his grip on the 16-21 class with a victory to follow up his solid display in round 1. Penzance’s Roots Youth Club plundered individual and team prizes across all three disciplines at the street series sw opening round at Mount Hawke on Friday 4 January. There was also some success for Truro’s Dead Sailor BMX riders and Saltash’s Junkyard put in a solid display to win a skateboard team prize. Round 1 of the five event series saw participants gather from right across the South West and beyond at one of the UK’s finest facilities. Prizes were kindly donated by Stateside Skates, Camp Rubicon and Skatewarehouse for the event. It has been a week since Sport England’s Active Lives Children and Young People report was published and the findings were shocking, but not surprising writes CEO Chris Broadbent. Less than one in five children are meeting the recommended activity guidelines, with one in three doing less than half an hour of physical activity per day. Teenage girls are less likely to be active, as are children from low income backgrounds. Hundreds of Devon and Cornwall’s most enthusiastic and talented BMX riders, skateboarders and scooterers aged 8-16 are getting set to compete for medals at the South Rotary West Youth Games street Sports finals at Mount Hawke Skatepark near Truro on Friday.
